Non-separable Hilbert Manifolds of Continuous Mappings
Using Toruńczyk’s charaterization theorem, we show that the space CB(X,Y ) of bounded continuous mappings from X into Y is a topological manifold modelled on the Hilbert space of weight 20 , with respect to the topology of uniform convergence, under the following three assumptions: (1) X is a noncompact, separable and metrizable space, (2) Y is a complete metric space which is an ANRU (ANR in u...
متن کاملFinding Non-Orientable Surfaces in 3-Manifolds
We investigate the complexity of finding an embedded non-orientable surface of Euler genus g in a triangulated 3-manifold. This problem occurs both as a natural question in low-dimensional topology, and as a first non-trivial instance of embeddability of complexes into 3-manifolds. We prove that the problem is NP-hard, thus adding to the relatively few hardness results that are currently known ...
متن کاملT"-Aetions on Holomorphically Separable Complex Manifolds*
Here we consider complex manifolds M which are holomorphically separable, i.e., the global holomorphic functions (9 (M) separate the points of M. We investigate T n (n-torus) actions on M, where T"={(ei~ ei~ 0eN"}, and n is the complex dimension of M. We assume that the action is effective, i.e., if 0ET ~ is nonzero, then there exists z e M with O.z+z. Our final assumption on the action is one ...
متن کاملSeparable Endomorphisms of Surfaces in Positive Characteristic
The structure of non-singular projective surfaces admitting non-isomorphic surjective separable endomorphisms is studied in the positive characteristic case. The case of characteristic zero is treated in [2], [16] (cf. [3]). Many similar classification results are obtained also in this case; on the other hand, some examples peculiar to the positive characteristic are given explicitly.
متن کاملHeegaard Surfaces and Measured Laminations, Ii: Non-haken 3-manifolds
A famous example of Casson and Gordon shows that a Haken 3-manifold can have an infinite family of irreducible Heegaard splittings with different genera. In this paper, we prove that a closed non-Haken 3-manifold has only finitely many irreducible Heegaard splittings, up to isotopy. This is much stronger than the Walderhausen conjecture. Another immediate corollary is that for any irreducible n...
